Islamic State Jihadist Group
Libyan pro-government forces have made significant gains in districts of Sirte in their battle to oust Islamic State fighters.
The military said they pushed back against a new offensive of jihadists holed up in their strongholds in Sirte after fierce fighting.
Pro government forces had struggled in the area because of strong resistance from jihadists who use suicide attacks and car bombs to slow down the military’s advance.
Muftah Abu Shaalah, spokesman for the pro government forces said,
“We are now very close. We are at the gates of the residential area number two. And, God willing, it will be only a matter of time before we can enter. The enemy is very aggressive and this war is different from all the wars in which we fought. Mainly because of their religious claims. There are fierce fights every day and especially at night. There are battles at night when they try to advance towards our positions. “
The pro government forces said the battle left four soldiers dead and 24 wounded while 10 IS militants were killed.
IS have been in charge of Sirte since June 2015.
